It’s time to get chimpanzees out of laboratory cages – and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., could play a key part in making that happen. Both Republicans and Democrats have stepped up to back this important piece of legislation. But the bill could die in Congress if Sen. Boxer doesn’t schedule a markup before the Committee on Environment and Public Works, which she chairs.
Thanks to your e-mails and phone calls there is now more bipartisan support for retiring chimpanzees from invasive experiments than ever before! The House version of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act now has over 150 co-sponsors, with more than 35 of those signing on to the bill after our last National Call-in Week in December! We’ll be asking you again to contact your representative in the House if he or she is not yet a co-sponsor, but right now we need to get the attention of your Senators.
Please take a minute to contact one or both of your Senators (please do not contact the current co-sponsors listed at the bottom of this alert, or Senator Mark Kirk, who is recovering from a stroke). Everything you need to call is in this e-mail, including talking points and how to find your Senators’ phone numbers.
Even if you have called or e-mailed before, please commit a few minutes today.
Here are some talking points:
I am calling to ask Senator [last name] to become a co-sponsor of S. 810, the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act.
The United States is the only industrialized nation to use chimpanzees in cruel, invasive experiments.
Last month, an Institute of Medicine report concluded that chimpanzees could not currently be deemed necessary for any area of human health research.
The science is clear on this issue and Congress should act to pass S. 810.
It is essential that we continue to build new support for this issue so please use the tell-a-friend link at the top of this alert to share this information with your friends.
It has never been more clear that chimpanzee experimentation should end. For years, the suffering of our closest genetic relatives was clear, with study after study pointing to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression in chimpanzees kept in laboratories. But more scientists are now speaking out on this issue. Read this great op-ed by University of California, San Diego professor and researcher Lawrence Hansen, M.D.
Join our fight to end the unethical and ineffective use of chimpanzees in experimentation. Your Senators need to know that you care about this issue.
Please call your Senators and urge them to support this historic bill – you can find their phone numbers here: http://ida.convio.net/site/PageServer?pagename=electedOfficials.
