King Amendment Officially Rejected!

Great news! The Farm Bill Conference Committee just released its conference report containing the final version of the U.S. Farm Bill. As ALDF has warned, the King Amendment would have prevented states from ever setting their own health, safety, and welfare standards and applying them to imported agricultural products produced in jurisdictions with weaker laws for animals.

We are happy to announce that the anti-animal King Amendment is nowhere to be found in any of the 949 pages that will be sent to the full House and Senate for a final vote. Celebrate with ALDF by leaving a comment on Facebook, and sharing the news with your friends. It’s a great day for animals!

Lolita’s Chance at Freedom!

Currently confined alone to a tank at the Miami Seaquarium that’s smaller than even the minimum standard required by federal law, Lolita the orca’s future could soon take a turn for the better.

After over 40 years, Lolita finally has a chance at freedom! ALDF, PETA, Orca Network, and others petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service to protect Lolita under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and it was announced today that a proposed rule would do just that! Protecting Lolita under the ESA is a crucial step forward in working to secure her release, so ALDF is celebrating this as a victory — join us!

Leave a brief, respectful comment in support of protecting Lolita under the ESA, or simply send a tweetthanking regulators for taking this crucial step. For more information on sharing this great news on social media, visit our website

A Great Day for American Horses

President Obama signed a new spending bill that contains some very good news for horses and those of us who love them. Most immediately, it ensures that horses will not be slaughtered for human consumption in this country for the time being — restoring a ban on using any Federal dollars to inspect horse slaughter facilities. Without those government inspections, slaughterhouses are not able to comply with Federal Meat Inspection Act standards. This is an important first step, but more action needs to be taken.

In order to truly bring an end to horse slaughter, we need you to urge your members of Congress to pass the Safeguard American Foods Export (SAFE) Act. This bill would permanently ban the domestic slaughter of horses and halt the export of American horses for slaughter abroad by prohibiting the “sale or transport of horses in interstate or foreign commerce for purposes of human consumption.” Visit our website for contact information and talking points. On the Ground with Elephants in Kenya

Follow the adventures of ALDF founder and general counsel, Joyce Tischler, as she reports back on her recent travels in Kenya. The poaching of African elephants has reached dangerously high levels, so Joyce visited to learn about what is being done on the ground to fight against this slaughter. She met with Kenyan animal advocates, visited an orphaned elephant sanctuary, met rescued baby elephants, travelled in the bush to thwart poachers by removing snare traps, and much more.

Read the first in a three part blog series and stay tuned for updates — including great video footage of bottle feeding baby elephants!

Urgent Action Needed For Michigan Animals

432290_2334759946826_1784642463_1462207_1170514139_n
EXTREMELY CRITICAL MESSAGE BELOW!!!!  PLEASE FORWARD AND POST ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER!!!!
WE MUST TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION AND STOP THIS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!!!
Thank you for your hard work and dedication in successfully collecting over 250,000 signatures to protect the wolves through a referendum petition.  Bringing the vote to the people of this state was supposed to determine on whether or not residents would accept the idea of wolves being killed via leg-hold traps for the sole purpose of trophy hunting, after recently being removed from theendangered species list.
After achieving our goal in the last several months, and being exposed to the outside elements in the extreme cold winter, the state government officials are now taking away our rights to vote as taxpayers of this state.
In a malicious power act to remove our rights in bringing this vote to the people, state government officials have introduced a senate bill, S.B. 288, which will be voted on this upcoming Tuesday.  The bill would allow the Michigan Natural Resource Commission to add animals to the list of game species to be sport hunted. Not only does this bill undermine the voice of the voter, but it transfers legislative power over wildlife into the hands of an unelected body, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.
If this bill passes through the Senate, the House of Representatives and Governor Snyder’s office, the Michigan NRC has every intention on adding cats, mourning doves, dogs and horses to the list of species of game animals to be hunted and trapped without any public input.
It’s not enough that the Michigan DNR, with the approval of the Michigan NRC has already been killing thousands of mute swans across the entire state by shooting, injuring them and then clubbing them to death!!!!!!
Please, I am asking you to call and write (if possible) before Tuesday, Rep. Tom Cochran (517) 373-0587, Senate Democrat Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer (517) 373-1734. Ask them to vote no on S.B. 288.
Please contact your own State Senator and House Representative, urging them to oppose S.B. 288.
Please click on this link to find out who your State Senator is:  www.senate.michigan.gov/findyoursenator/michiganfys.asp or you can call at (517) 373-2400
To find your House Representative either call  (517) 373-6339 or go to the website:  http://www.house.michigan.gov/, click on REPRESENTATIVES and then scroll down to FIND A REPRESENTATIVE.

Governor Bullock, Don’t Buy Into The Wolf Hysteria, VETO HB 73!!

wolfparanoia

“A typical wolf about to take your children and eat your job”..Rational Wiki

UPDATE: February 7, 2013

Well today the rubber met the road in the Montana Senate.  HB 73 was rammed through and is on its way to Governor Bullock’s desk for signing.

The Governor heard NO, NO, NO  from people all over the country and the world, concerning the wolf hating legislation.  But apparently that wasn’t enough to change his mind. It looks like he’s going to sign it and if he does we’ll know there has been little change in Helena.  Montanans, who voted for Governor Bullock, believing he wouldn’t  jump on the wolf persecution train, will be proved dead wrong.  The same-old same-old wolf hysteria,  that has nothing what-so-ever to do with science or reality is still permeating the Montana Capital.    Read more on original post: http://howlingforjustice.wordpress.com/2013/02/08/governor-bullock-dont-buy-into-the-wolf-hysteria-veto-hb-73/
